My Fairytale

Guest Blogger :: Shannon

My fairytale began 9/18/03, the day I said, “I love you Erika…”and before I could finish came, “I love you too Shannon.” I will always remember the look on her face because she still looks at me that way today. Erika has this way about her…I never thought anyone would adore me this way. She does. I never thought I would want to sleep next to someone every single night and wake up so excited to see THAT person every day of my life. But Erika changed so much for me. Now, that doesn’t mean I didn’t think about her sexy curves, perfect mouth, and how totally HOT she looked in that cowboy hat…because I did and STILL do every day!

I always dreamed of the fairy tale kind of love…not the cliché, “knight on a white horse” kind of love, but a journey with someone who exudes passion with every breath, every thought, every move…Erika makes EVERYONE laugh. If you meet her, please ask her to do impressions of Carlton and Ace Ventura. I must admit, after being the “funny, loud one” for so long, social engagements morphed into “battle of the funniest girl”… we have A BLAST together!! Cinderella and Snow “Hispanic”–the “modern” fairytale.

So what does a “straight” girl tell her family and friends? Is there something more appropriate than, “I fell in love. Her name is Erika. I want you to meet her, love her, accept her. Accept us, and love me as you always have…unconditionally.” No. I don’t really think there is. To be fair…I too would have most likely asked my friends the big question, “Are you a lesbian? Are you bi?” My answer is, “Who cares?!” My friends will say, “No, she just loves Erika.” And because I show a small bias towards my friends, I must say…THEY FRIGGIN’ ROCK!!

Of course there were a few that didn’t approve or thought, “is this a phase.” Hmm…a phase, like the Atkins Diet? Scrunchy neon socks? NO.

My parents, eh, I expected them to be TOTALLY freaked out…my bro was SO chill. He said, “Cool!”…ahhh…relief. But a few friends…I could see “NO GAYS ALLOWED!” expressions and of course, heard the gossip. But what fairy tale is complete with out a little “scary tower/dragon sword-battle” stuff? MY fairytale is packed with gingerbread houses, wicked witches, sleeping beauties, candy lands…and smiles. Lots and lots of smiles…

About Shannon

…but you can call me Shan! My wife, family and friends are my number ones. I’m a team leader working with 14 to 21-year-old CPS/foster care youth and truly enjoy supporting their very unique situations. I love living in AZ, although I can never get used to the summers. I think it’s important to return unwanted items back to the correct aisle/bin at the grocery store (especially refrigerated or frozen foods). I love to sing, play the piano, and I can even still do the splits…seriously, I can but only with my left leg in front. Although it’s hard, I try to live by a set of rules my big brother shared with me in 7th grade: #1. Don’t Care What Other People Think, #2. Be Nice, #3. Smile. In our community, people struggle every day with sharing smiles and accepting them…I hope we can ALL smile at each other one day but first, I will share mine with MRSter.
