Real Wedding :: Bill + Brian

This week is an extra special week of because we are highlighting the wedding of Bill + Brian. They are among the all powerful and simply wonderfully sweet event producers for Phoenix Pride and the Pride Wedding Expo. They shared with me months ago about their ceremony in Mykonos, Greece and I loved their creativity and there was no holding back on the apparel! Love it boys!

What a fantastic shot of them on a perfect sunset backdrop.

One of the things that Billy mentioned was difficult about planning their wedding was finding an officiant. Once they finally did things were smooth sailing! (Almost as smooth as Brian's legs! :))

This picture is so much fun as they look to be so excited about tieing the knot! Congrats you two and I look forward to hearing more stories about being MARRIED!

Here are a few other questions I asked the guys about their wedding day.

Event Date :: 07.10.08

Number of Guests :: 50 at Reception & 4 at the Wedding

Do you prefer to call it a commitment ceremony or wedding? Why :: Wedding, because in our eyes it was a wedding.

What was the first thing you did after you decided to commit your lives together? :: Booked a cruise!!

What was the most memorable part of your day? Sunset champagne toast and dinner with greek wedding cake at Cavo Tagoo in Mykonos, Greece.

Napa Valley Nuptials

Guest Blogger:: Gina

I came across photos of this amazing winery in Napa Valley, CA, and had to share. The modern design elements thrown in with the dark wood and rustic appeal of wine barrels is pure genius. Reception in a cave without the bat guano --count me in!

Merus winery has a large cave reception space, tasting room and gorgeous surroundings:

Incredible design (and photos) by Uxus, an Amsterdam-based company with a flair for merging new with well-lived.

Miami Beach, Part Two

Guest Blogger :: Alejandro

Did you not read part one? Start there then read here.

While I prefer to spend most of my time in the water on South Beach, venturing outside to the rest of Miami Beach is a must.  Immediately west of South Beach you’ll find shopping on Collins Avenue.  North of there, on Lincoln Road is Lincoln Road Shopping Center. This has to be one of my favorite spots outside of South Beach.  It’s about four blocks of pedestrian walkways with what else--shopping, as well as lots of little restaurants. No one is hassling you to sit down at their tables here. This is a great stop for an evening bite before heading out to the clubs (which close at 4 a.m., FYI). There are clubs and hotel lounges all over Miami Beach, so choose wisely.

After a long night of imbibing, a great spot to soak up the alcohol is the 11th Street Diner, located on 11th Street and Washington, a couple blocks west of Ocean Avenue.  This is a must-see whether you’re finishing up your night or you are looking for “hair of the dog” later that morning, as they are open 24 hours a day.  This is truly some great diner food!

Now comes the interesting part, venturing off the island of Miami Beach.  One of the reasons that I truly love this city is my people. ¡Bienvenidos a Miami! The Latinos are all over and we dominate the town.  It’s practically a requirement to speak Spanish. You’ll find hundreds of hole-in-the-wall restaurants to sample different Latin dishes. Cuban, Colombian, Puerto Rican, Peruvian…you name it, they’ve got it.  Another benefit of being off Miami Beach is that prices for food, drink, and accommodations go down considerably.

If you haven’t gotten it yet, a vacation for me is eating, a little shopping, and a lot of fun with the one you love.  Miami is a great spot to escape the daily worries of life and truly unwind and spend some quality and quantity time with that special someone, hence why I believe Miami to be the perfect getaway for the happy couple.

Miami is the New Vegas Part 1

 Guest Blogger :: Alejandro

Trade in the Little White Chapel for white sandy beaches. According to who the hell knows who…. Las Vegas is the second most popular destination for weddings in the world, with 114,000 weddings in 2008 (first is Istanbul with 166,000…never been, but I’ll add it to the list). Las Vegas has enjoyed resurgence in popularity over the last decade, and trust that I have had the privilege of indulging in the debauchery that is “Lost” Vegas…TRUST. Needless to say, I am over it. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Vegas times, but it’s just too much. I can only imagine how many of those 114,000 weddings that Las Vegas has hosted will end in divorce. Perhaps a change of scenery would help ensure longer lasting, happier unions.

South Beach Miami

What better place than (drum roll please), Miami. Miami has everything that Vegas has but with ocean front views (screw the garden view rooms). The gambling is definitely not what it is in Vegas, but I digress. Miami has refined the art of fine living and relaxation. Fashion, exceptional design, international cuisine, and mojitos have converged to create an upscale playground for the beautiful people, and rest assured, the not-so-beautiful as well (cut to me playing volleyball in a Speedo).

In all seriousness, Miami is a beautiful setting for a destination wedding or even a quickie wedding, or the honeymoon afterwards. While gay marriage still is not legal in the state of Florida, Miami has always had a vibrant and thriving gay community and is one of the most gay-friendly locations in the country. Plus the water is always warm!

South Beach is the place to see and be seen. Right on Ocean Drive you will find a whole bunch of restaurants with guys out front screaming and fighting for your business. It’s kind of like the guys on the Strip flapping the “Kimmy & Jenny: 2 for 1” cards all up in your face, only in this case, its 2 for 1 cocktails, not tail. South Beach is also home to most of Miami’s trendiest corporate and boutique hotels. While the Fountainbleau and the Delano are a couple of the hottest hotels at the moment, I prefer something a little more personal. Check out gay-friendly The Strand Hotel or The Victor Hotel (next to the Casa Casuarina a.k.a. Versace Mansion), both located on Ocean Drive in Miami’s historic art-deco district. Quick design note, the Strand incorporates the Congress Hotel building, which was designed by Henry Honhauser in 1936 in the art-deco heyday, as part of the hotel. The Hotel Victor was designed by L. Murray Dixon and was just redesigned in ’03 by decorator Jacques Garcia.

Destination Arizona in the Summer

Guest Blogger :: Gina Niemiec

As the summer heat settles in, my mind usually wanders to cooler climes. If I can't make it there physically, daydreaming about my next vacation is the next best thing. Living in the Phoenix area, we all know how popular our Valley is for snowbirds, but it is also a popular spot for destination weddings. When ice and snow take over parts of the east coast in winter, couples flock to our temperate city to exchange vows and give their family and friends a respite from the gloom. Now that we central Arizonans are going in to months of scorch, think of your own getaway for a one-of-a-kind wedding.

Spare yourself the months of planning and worry (and frankly, over thinking) and throw a summer wedding in one of our beautiful Arizona towns that don't see triple-digit temps. There are great spots all over the state, and some locales will do all the work for you. If not, lots of vendors from the Phoenix area will be all-too-happy to provide services in other parts of the state (we need a break from the summertime blues, too!). From uber-casual to formal but not stuffy, look in to a weekend or longer away that your wedding guests will never forget. One of my top picks is Hidden Meadow Ranch right outside Greer. Located in the White Mountains about 4 hours from Phoenix, Greer is a tiny town full of charm, pine trees and temperatures that rarely go above 80 degrees. Hidden Meadow Ranch claims its own mountain top right outside of town, and offers complete luxury in a (very upscale) cabin setting. Renting out the whole ranch for your nuptials grants you and your guests an all-inclusive three gourmet meals a day, horseback riding, hiking and spectacular service. Margarita hayrides, s'mores by the fire, and a sky full of stars will enchant your guests. A gorgeous outdoor ceremony area surrounded by aspens is included, and the staff will have it set with chairs for your guests, and a horse-drawn carriage for the couple. This is luxury at its finest.

Rancho De La Osa, 65 miles south of Tucson, is a 300-year-old property that oozes charm. Rather than the high-country cowboy charm of Greer, give your guests a thoroughly southwest experience in this hacienda that can accommodate up to 50 guests in an estate with a pool, gorgeous mountain scenery and a Spanish-style flair. For a quick getaway, caravan up to the Sedona/Oak Creek area with spectacular red rocks and a sparkling creek for guests explore. Oak Creek Terrace is a quaint 23-room resort that can be rented out for your entire group. Hannigan's Meadow is a remote, gorgeous town in northeast Arizona and a place where everyone can forget about their day-to-day responsibilities and just enjoy the company of good friends, family, and a new beginning for the happy couple.

Taking the ceremony and reception out of town may take the stress off of you, as well. Let experienced venues and vendors take over your vision, show up a few days before the event to start relaxation mode, and show your guests a great time. Summer's heat will be a distant memory, and your guests will be talking about the getaway for years to come.
