A Pre-Wedding Honeymoon? Yes, We Are Taking One (or Two)!

Guest Blogger :: Shannon

Who said that a honeymoon has to come after the wedding? Probably most people…but wouldn’t an inexpensive, fun trip with cooler weather, a beach and numerous theme parks provide a needed break from wedding planning? YES! Erika and I received a small lump sum from my parents as a wedding gift to be utilized for whatever we needed. My mom specified the money was for ANYTHING including a trip…so we are heading to gorgeous California to celebrate our six years together and to get a needed vacation from the AZ heat. Actually, we are taking two trips--San Diego in September and L.A. in October.

The L.A. itinerary brings us to Universal Studios, Sunset Strip, and of course shopping at Santee Alley where you can find deals on purses, perfume, clothes and accessories.

 The San Diego trip in September includes staying at the Best Western in Coronado (with a great discount), Sea World and lots of beach fun.

Tips for an affordable pre-wedding honeymoon:

1. Ask for Discounts :: Ask friends, family and employers if they can “hook you up” with a deal, discount, or coupon. Many employers offer discounts to theme parks. Other areas to receive discounts are military, senior, AAA, local grocery stores, and with your credit card companies. Check with friends/family that live in the state you are visiting to see if they get a resident discount. I have a friend in California, so we are able to get the resident discount AND, because her brother is military, we get that discount too.

2. Do your Research :: Check online. There are several websites that provide coupons, package deals, and discounts.

3. Low Cost or No Cost :: Try to plan low- or no-cost activities like going to the beach, sight seeing, hiking, looking at different neighborhoods, window shopping, picnicking, or festivals. Check online for information.

4. PLAN PLAN PLAN :: I know that it’s really fun to just pick up and go, however, if you are unfamiliar with all a city has to offer, check it out beforehand to make sure once you get there you are doing more and searching less.

5. Bring a Camera :: A great way to de-stress and relive a fun vacation is to put pics in a photo album, make a scrap book and then share them with friends and family.

My fiancé, Erika, and I planned on a honeymoon up the coast of California but it was just too expensive for us. With a few modifications to our budget, lots of exploration for discounts, and a "plan”--another fairytale comes to life!

Here are a few links that helped us plan our trips that I would like to share with you.

Miami is the New Vegas Part 1

 Guest Blogger :: Alejandro

Trade in the Little White Chapel for white sandy beaches. According to who the hell knows who…. Las Vegas is the second most popular destination for weddings in the world, with 114,000 weddings in 2008 (first is Istanbul with 166,000…never been, but I’ll add it to the list). Las Vegas has enjoyed resurgence in popularity over the last decade, and trust that I have had the privilege of indulging in the debauchery that is “Lost” Vegas…TRUST. Needless to say, I am over it. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Vegas times, but it’s just too much. I can only imagine how many of those 114,000 weddings that Las Vegas has hosted will end in divorce. Perhaps a change of scenery would help ensure longer lasting, happier unions.

Jennifer & Me

South Beach Miami

What better place than (drum roll please), Miami. Miami has everything that Vegas has but with ocean front views (screw the garden view rooms). The gambling is definitely not what it is in Vegas, but I digress. Miami has refined the art of fine living and relaxation. Fashion, exceptional design, international cuisine, and mojitos have converged to create an upscale playground for the beautiful people, and rest assured, the not-so-beautiful as well (cut to me playing volleyball in a Speedo).

In all seriousness, Miami is a beautiful setting for a destination wedding or even a quickie wedding, or the honeymoon afterwards. While gay marriage still is not legal in the state of Florida, Miami has always had a vibrant and thriving gay community and is one of the most gay-friendly locations in the country. Plus the water is always warm!

South Beach is the place to see and be seen. Right on Ocean Drive you will find a whole bunch of restaurants with guys out front screaming and fighting for your business. It’s kind of like the guys on the Strip flapping the “Kimmy & Jenny: 2 for 1” cards all up in your face, only in this case, its 2 for 1 cocktails, not tail. South Beach is also home to most of Miami’s trendiest corporate and boutique hotels. While the Fountainbleau and the Delano are a couple of the hottest hotels at the moment, I prefer something a little more personal. Check out gay-friendly The Strand Hotel or The Victor Hotel (next to the Casa Casuarina a.k.a. Versace Mansion), both located on Ocean Drive in Miami’s historic art-deco district. Quick design note, the Strand incorporates the Congress Hotel building, which was designed by Henry Honhauser in 1936 in the art-deco heyday, as part of the hotel. The Hotel Victor was designed by L. Murray Dixon and was just redesigned in ’03 by decorator Jacques Garcia.
