Hire Jay-Z to DJ Your Wedding

Rumor has it, Jay-Z wants to dive into the world of wedding receptions. Taking time away from rapping, songwriting, and producing, this media mogul wants to try his hand at the turntables. He plans to put on quite a show too, complete with a video screen playing behind him and live backup dancers. His services won't come cheap, of course. The multi-millionaire artist plans to research the highest paid DJ, and then charge double! While the wedding reception would certainly be talked about for years to come, I'm thinking he may steal some of the spotlight from the couple, no? Would you hire Jay-Z to DJ your wedding?

Whoopie! Equal Newlywed Game

Guest Blogger :: Gina

Actor George Takei (Mr. Sulu from the original Star Trek series) will be a contestant on the Newlywed Game with his long-time partner (and new husband Brad Altman). This will be the first gay couple on the classic game show, which has been on-and-off the air since 1967. Check out the link here

Takei is hilarious (his turns on Howard Stern are always gems), so watching this episode will hopefully bring the Newlywed Game back to its old glory days of wit and candor. Congratulations, George and Brad!

Photo Booth Ideas--Week 3

Guest Blogger :: Gina

A CD of your favorite love songs ("Eternal Flame," anyone?), a heart-shaped wine stopper, chocolate bars with the happy couple's names on them...we have all seen these wedding favors show up time and time again. As an event floral designer, I have often dropped in after weddings and witnessed all the left over favors that never made their way home. Hence my large collection of slow dance numbers and a hefty candy stockpile. At a recent event held by Phoenix Bride and Groom, a fantastic company called Flipbook Memories set up shop with their mobile studio. This was my first introduction to the modern-day flipbooks, and it was a huge hit. Not long after, Cicely, the wedding planning diva, pulled together an event for a 50th birthday party (yes, she does those too) and also contracted the services of Flipbook Memories.

Check out the fun! Pictured below are Chris and Tammie Billey of Largo Photography, Cicely Rocha-Miller of Life Design Event Planning and her brother Nico...isn't he cute?

Flipbooks have been around since 1882, when each frame had to be taken individually, and the printing process was time-consuming. Now, a video camera and a 10x10 space is all that is needed to create one-of-a-kind favors for your guests. Flipbook Memories sets up the area and backdrop, provides props (hats, boas, goofy glasses and signs such as "I love him THIS much") and lets the partygoers go wild. Grab your friends and relatives and make your own interactive video. The machine that is on site prints, cuts and binds the book, turning the silliness into your own favor within minutes. Flipbook can churn out 40 to 50 books per hour, so all of your guests can participate. Personalize the cover with a message and date of your event, and you can be sure that no favors are left behind.

Don’t be afraid to go UNconventional

We have all been to the traditional wedding ceremony and reception and I don’t know about any of you, but I am over it! When planning your special day don’t be afraid to be daring, out of the norm, and eccentric! In planning my own ceremony I decided that I wanted it to be a night to remember so I planned it to be different with an evening of surprises, and it went over very well! Here are some tips for planning outside the box…

Tip # 1: Choosing the perfect table designs::

Make choices that really encompass your personality, so if you are music buffs use some old records instead of chargers. Or for all you retro-loving peeps consider using furry or polyester linens instead of the standard cottons or satins. There is no rule of thumb on matching tables either, symmetrical is boring so by offering different table décor it will your offer your guests the chance to walk around and experience each table separately, they will love the element of surprise and appreciate the details.

Tip # 2: Keeping your guests amused ::

I think it’s very important to involve your guests in the evening's activities, and you can do this in a variety of different ways. Any wedding I have been to had the standard guest book signing, money dance, and of course the ever-so-boring speeches (sometimes unexpected ones). Well I say throw all those ideas out the window and give your friends and family some activities to remember! For my ceremony we offered tarot card readings and it was a huge hit amongst partygoers. You can choose anything for your guests to do that might fit your unique style, just make sure to offer something for everyone.

Tip # 3: Bring some style to the aisle ::

Now its hard to imagine, and might sound a bit shocking to some, but there is no reason to walk down the aisle. Imagine rocking down the aisle! Instead of the traditional "dum...dum...da...dum," consider switching up the tunes and playing your favorite songs--what a concept! I’m brilliant!! Okay maybe not, but why not tango, salsa, or break dance your way through the crowd? Believe me, it’s a great way to shock your guests and it will be quickly accepted and enjoyed by everyone; not to mention a grand opening for all the other great times to come that evening.

Hopefully some of these tips are helpful, just remember to keep it fresh, bold and uniquely you!

Until next time…Joey

Happy Dad's Day!

With Father's Day coming to a close, I started thinking about the timeless father-of-the-bride tradition, the father-daughter dance.

Image by Greg Gibson Photography.

Somewhere between the toasts and cake cutting, teary-eyed fathers spin their daughters around the dance floor to a carefully selected tune.  For most brides, the dance is thought of well before the wedding day as the inevitable question of song selection rears its head.

Having trouble choosing your song?  Don't feel confined to the traditional picks.  There is no law that says you have to dance to "Butterfly Kisses"! My recommendation?  Make your dad a CD of songs you both enjoy, and let him choose his favorite.  It will get him involved and take the pressure of choosing the perfect song off of you!

A few ideas to get the brainstorming started...

"The Way You Look Tonight" by Louis Armstrong

"Unforgettable" by Natalie Cole

"In My Life" by the Beatles

"Thank You" by Led Zeppelin

"There You'll Be" by Faith Hill

"Gracie" by Ben Folds

Whether you choose rock and roll, swing or country, just make sure it's a song you'll have a blast kicking up your heels to!
